ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Malloy is Now FSC and SFI Certified
Ann Arbor, MI (June 17, 2008)
Malloy is pleased to announce that it has received dual Chain of Custody (CoC) certification with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
Over the past year, many members of the book industry supply chain have obtained CoC certification with either FSC or SFI (more often with FSC), though most have not obtained certification with both. In explaining why Malloy sought certification from both organizations, Bill Upton, President of Malloy explained, “Both FSC and SFI were created to ensure that our practices for harvesting wood are sustainable and protect the natural resources contained in our forests. The goals of the FSC and SFI programs are similar, and their standards contain many common elements. Each program spells out objectives for the protection of endangered species, wildlife, soil quality and water quality. Both systems were developed by diverse groups of stakeholders, and adherence to their respective standards is certified by accredited independent third party auditors.”
Upton also explained that Malloy’s decision to obtain CoC certification was not taken lightly, but was done following an extended period of investigation. Upton remarked, “The paper that Malloy uses comes almost exclusively from the United States and Canada. Over the past year, we’ve spent a considerable amount of time trying to better understand the issues regarding forestry practices in North America. In the process, we’ve done our own research and consulted with a number of experts, and the clear conclusion that we’ve come to is that the benefits of forestry certification are substantial. While the origins of FSC and SFI differ and they have different processes for developing their standards, we don’t perceive a significant difference between the two programs in terms of sustainability and protecting resources. Therefore, dual certification enables us to offer our customers a broader selection of certified paper than if we were to simply conform to one program or the other.”
